Add a new property

Hello,

I have a new request for developers.

Would it be possible to associate with each object a “comment” property which could be empty and which would appear in the object properties window.

When the drawing includes hundreds of objects and especially points, some of which are used to delimit the pattern piece while others are used to make calculations and checks.

We can of course use color codes depending on the function of the objects but this is very limiting.

Thank you for your response.

I believe that this is something which @Douglas is looking into, at a low priority.

But it sounds like what you’re wanting can already be achieved pretty well using Groups. Just add a group for each category you want to put your object in, & then you can right-click any object & Add Group Object. Or you can use the Add Objects to Group tool in the Operations toolbox to add multiple objects to a group at once.

Of course the groups that an object belongs to are not sign-posted on the object, you have to right-click the object to find its groups or consult the Groups manager for lists of objects belonging to each category.

Happy drafting!

As @Pneumarian has pointed out… use the groups. You can create for ex: a “calculations” group… and add those tools which are just for calculations that you can then hide by turning the groups visibilty off.

Well theoretically the idea was to be able to assign a tool the “by group” color, and if you have the “use tool color” toggled on for point names… you would be able to identify which group a tool belongs to by the point name color. Problem is users were taking advantage of a loop hole that allows one to put a tool into multiple groups creating an issue of which group color to use.

I should note that being able to put tools into multiple groups is like Schrödinger’s cat… where a cat can be simultaneously Lime and Magenta.

Don’t you mean simultaneously Lime OR Magenta?

How difficult would it be to make the colors fraction slices of the point pies, like that cat in your post? (I’m assuming “Difficult enough to not be worth looking more closely at before XYZ are done, or someone jumps in especially for that project.”)

No… AND. That’s what Schrödinger’s cat thought experiment illustrated… that the cat was simultaneously alive AND dead, where its fate is tied to a random subatomic event, only collapsing to one state upon observation.

And that’s kids of what I’m thinking with the groups… that a tool is all it’s groups color until an observation (if you will) is made… like selecting a group in the manger and the state of the tool’s color changes.

I’ve thought of that too… painting the Text with a gradient brush made up of the constituent group colors.
