Getting up and running with Valentina

Hi there,

My bride is a dress-maker and I am myself a developer. I’d like to help her by contributing to Valentina.

Do you have advice regarding how to get up and running with Valentina codebase? I am experienced with Java, far less with C++ and QT, so if you have good tutorials in French or in English, please share them.

What are the classes that I should look first? Is there a recommended IDE? I plan to use QT creator (indeed).

Regards,

Pierre

La vie est source de joie, la mort est source de paix, seule la transition est difficile.

Here are two other authors of patternmaking books I can recommend:

  1. Winifred Aldrich
  2. Lori A. Knowles

Winifred Aldrich’s books are excellent, there are no mistakes in her books (unlike Helen Joseph Armstrong and Connie Almaden Crawford), the patterns work as described. But she includes 1cm seam allowances in her formulas – you may have to adjust to adjust the formulas to remove the seam allowances as Valentina will add seam allowances for you.

Lori A. Knowles’s books are excellent, no mistakes, easy to understand and her books are spiral bound to make it easy to work with them. She has a large number of patterns included in each of her books (one for women’s garments, one for men’s).

Yes, some information we have.

Look here:

  1. Our WIKI https://bitbucket.org/valentinateam/valentina/wiki/Home. You can fix text if you will find errors. See page for developers https://bitbucket.org/valentinateam/valentina/wiki/developers/Welcome
  2. We use doxygen for generation documentation. Also available online version http://valentinaproject.bitbucket.org/documentation/index.html (need update). You can create your version. On Linux very easy. But documentation doesn’t cover all classes and not very good. Good documentation big task.
  3. Two articles http://valentinaproject.bitbucket.org/articles/content.html about algorithms i used.
  4. See our Issue Tracker https://bitbucket.org/valentinateam/valentina/issues?status=new&status=open for available task.
  5. If you don’t know how use mercurial spend some time and read this book http://hgbook.red-bean.com/read/ online. Also i recommend use TortoiseHg.
  6. Ask here if you have question.
  7. You can help translate Valentina here https://www.transifex.com/organization/valentina/dashboard/valentina-021 .

Thanks, man! Are there any good books I could read in order to learn the pattern-making basis? My bride can teach me, but she herself learned on the job, maybe a book could give me a more precise knowledge.
