How to export to Pdf with a scale reference?

Hi Guys! I’m really new to Digital Pattern Making (been using the old paper and rulers for the past years) but downloaded Seamly yesterday and I have to say that I’m having lots of fun learning something new! I would like to apologize for my english, as it is not my first language, and I think this might be kind of the reason why I’m not finding the answer to this question in this forum…

So, my problem is: I’ve been able to export the PDF and make the “PDF tiles” for my pattern to print in A4. But even though I (think I) have set the properties correctly, I worry that something may go wrong and the real size of my pattern is wrong in the end. I was hoping that the pages would have some kind of size reference/guideline, so I could check with a ruler, or something like that, in the moment of printing. As I do not currently own a printer in my home, I would be printing in different places and think it would be really important to check before printing all of the pages.

Is there an option for that? How could I do it?

Also, would like to say that Seamly is a great software and going through the topics in this forum has been really helpful! Thanks in advance

Hi @JulianaV,

Welcome to the forum!

Our export feature will be updated soon, it’s in our roadmap. When we begin to work on recreating this feature, would you be interested in providing feedback and testing?

Hello & welcome, @JulianaV

I normally make a small square pattern piece that is 5cm x 5cm labeled Test Square and include it in the PDF, for this purpose.

Not really answering your question but if you don’t own a printer, you should consider just printing A0 size or plotter size using printing services near you. I used to order it online for cheap. If you can’t find such service, you can ask architecture students, they always know. But it takes times to be delivered if I don’t collect it myself so now I just use projector.

Thank you, @slspencer !

Sure! I would like that!

Thank you @Grace :grinning:

The test square is a great option!

I tried to do that, but had some difficulty when going to the Layout Mode. Is there a specific way to make the test square always stay in the first page? Maybe I’m missing a step here… or is this just not possible?

Thank you so much for your help!

Thanks for your suggestion! I will also be saving in this format, I just want to have both options because not all of the places in my city have this option

You can try putting it inside the pattern piece that prints on the first page, as an internal path.

Brilliant… why didn’t I ever think of that? :grinning:

I’ve always thought of having a tool that creates a draft block that is basically a square of a user defined size. Maybe it would make more sense to have a detail tool that adds a square of a user selected size with anchor point options that is added to a pattern piece? Much like the grainlines and labels. In fact the tool would pretty much be a label box with no text content, where we give it a pen to display the outline of the box. Or maybe we do keep a text that displays the size… something like “Test square 10cm x 10cm”.

I also just had a coding lightbulb momment which is beyond the scope of this topic, but would faciltate resolving a structural impediment to adding new detail features to a pattern piece, such as multiple grainlines, text boxes, symbols, buttonholes… or test squares.

Always happy to supply inspiration!!!

And very happy to hear from you. I hope your snow isn’t too cold & deep.

Not that much snow… just been really cold, but then I pretty much only go out to grab the mail. Somedays I don’t even have to do that. I now get an email in the morning with scans if there is any mail that’s being delivered that day. If it’s only junk mail or none at all I don’t go out.

I put a square in an internal path in a pattern piece. The square is usually 2*unit_scale. I always include a variable called unit_scale that I set to either 2.54 or 1. This allows me to draft a pattern and use it in either inches or cm. I simply use “*unit_scale” in any calculations that have to resize. This way if I want to use a multi size measurement table or an individual inches based measurement table I only have to change one thing in the pattern. I change unit_scale to be either 1 or 2.54 and every thing just works
