Labels don't show in piece mode

Hi,

newbie here - first of all, a big thank you to all those involved in programming, making tutorials and answering questions in the forum! I am learning pattern making just for fun, as a hobby, and I have only used pencil and paper so far. This is my first try using a computer for it. Using Seamly is so much more fun! I managed to draft a pants pattern and adjust it so it fits.

What I am struggling with right now is labeling all the pattern pieces. The labels are there, they show up in the layout, on the pdf, and they get printed, but I can not see them in piece mode. I watched tutorials by Dina and minimalistmachinist - it is obviously possible to drag labels to anywhere you want them in piece mode. I just cannot figure out how to make the labels visible in piece mode. How do I do that?

I speak German and English, by the way.

Hi @SunnyField

That depends. If you anchor them to anchor points - which I highly recomend if you are going to be using different sizes with a pattern - they can not be moved. You can resize them or rotate them if using just a center anchor point, but you can not (drag) move them - they will stay anchored and move with the anchor point(s). Same holds true for the Grainlines.

I’m going to assume you have created a template for both the pattern and piece labels and have checked in the option to show them. So I’m guessing that you have the label visiblity toggled off. You can toggle them back on with the View->toolbar:

The View menu-> Labels:

Or simply type V, L for View Labels.

And just a note… you can also toggle the Grainlines, Curve Control Points, The Seam Allowance, the Axis Origin point… and Wireframe mode (which will make a bit more sense with a pending update). For now this only affects the visibilty in Piece Mode, which is why you can see them in a Layout / PDF export.

The reason for being able to toggle these items off is for users that want to export different sizes to an SVG and then make a nest of all the sizes in another app like Inkscape or Illustrator without having multiple labels and grainlines.

As far adding and setting anchors points… You can add an anchor point to a piece with the Anchor point tool:

Select a point and which piece you want to add it to:

Then in the Pattern Piece Properties → Labels you can set which anchor point(s) you want to anchor the label(s) or grainlines to:

Good to know. Another set of eyes if we make a bad translation to German in the UI. :slightly_smiling_face:

BTW… while we’re on the subject, and just to be thorough - the Point Names have their own toolbar:

But they also have a View menu item:

Thank you Douglas, that toggle button, hiding in plain sight in the middle of my screen, did the trick! Thanks also for the additional handy hints. Used them already

I’ll do my best to help, but I am not a professional pattern maker or sewist, and not familiar with the technical terms in German. I’m learning this stuff… in an interesting mix-up of German and English, as many internet resources are in English. The book I use for pattern making is German, though.

What caught my eye - both tabs, Piece Label and Pattern Label translate to “Schnittteil Etikett” in the German version of Seamly. If that sounds right to professional ears, would it be possible to change the Pattern Label translation to “Schnittmuster Etikett”? :bouquet:

Thank you for pointing out what is clearly an error. They should not read the same and I can make the change.

Update: I made the change on my end… as soon as I can upload and get the change merged it will be in an updated translations release.
