Hi all,
I have a query about matching seam lengths on curved pieces, where the curve radii are different.
This piece’s (‘B’) axis length matches the exact curve length of it’s intended matching piece (‘A’), but to create more ‘volume’ in the proposed item I made the supposition that, instead of a parallel cut piece, I would like to place a curved piece into the item’ seam.
However, in order to match the notches in ‘A’, these notches (‘A8’, ‘A5’, ‘A9’ & ‘A10’ [*not shown!]), I set notch points on the curves of ‘B’ (‘D5’ → ‘D6’ [clockwise]) with the spacing of the points along the axis of the piece.
I set the notches ‘D2’ & ‘D3’ at 90° to the axis from ‘D_A5’ and the other 4 (‘D5’, ‘D7’, ‘D1’ & ‘D6’, ‘D8’, ‘D4’) using the points spacing along the axis and setting the lengths relative to the nearest ‘end point’ (‘D_A8_D_A11’ & ‘D_A10_D_A12‘) of the axis.
My Issue: since the notches are not lining up as I would like, I am assuming that I have an error in my thought train regarding ‘where’ and from ‘which’ reference point(s) on the axis I should set the notches on the radius of the curve.
I have read postings that reference this issue, but have not been able to really straighten out my confusion here.
If anyone has a ‘simple’ answer or enlightening example, I would be most grateful.

I am not sure if I understand what you are trying to achieve, but why are you not using “point on curve”?
- are you trying to achieve same measurements or same ration on the curve?
Actually it doesn’t matter, in both cases I would use “point on curve”:
- in first case I would use ratios with the length of the curve A
- in the second case I would use ratios with the length of the curve B

Hi,
‘yes’. I did use ‘Point on Curve’ for the notch points, and used the distances between the points on the axis line (‘D_A8_D_A11’ & ‘D_A10_D_A12‘) which represent the spacing of the notches on the base piece ‘A’.
If this is still not clarified, I will post the relevant pattern pieces in an ‘.SM2D’ file.

I think my difficulty is knowing from which point / points I should distribute the notch points on the curve.
Do I start at one end and work ‘Left-to-Right’ (for example), of from the centre outwards ???

I would have to see all the pieces in context, but I would say you would want the center, then some distance in from each end.

Hi @Douglas … That sounds like a plan - Thanks!

It would be like a collar, where the center notch on the collar would match the CB seam, and the notches on each end of the collar would match the roll line on the neck opening… any slight difference between the CB and end notches of the collar would get eased in.
