i’d like the seam allowance to be a point at A5. changing the angle doesn’t seem to change anything.

Yes, it does this if the angle causes the point to extend too far beyond the corner. Otherwise it would take too much fabric that will be cut off anyway:
This is one of the anomalies of the app that doesn’t have a fix at the momment. It has to do with when the angle at a corner becomes acute enough (approx 49.248 deg) that the “by length” angle option no longer creates a point at the corner. As illustrated in the 2 pics below:
Personally I always clipped any points off at what would be “by points intersection”.
IMO unless you’re cutting pieces as appliques, or the pattern piece has no seam allowance - there’s no practical reason to having the points.
More specifically when the angle becomes less than 49.249 degrees.
That, and it’s just easier to sew when you know where the seam allowance is. For example… when sewing the outside seam of a 2 piece sleeve… if the blue point section is not cut off, you don’t know where to line up the 2 parts. Cutting the point off will automatically give you the red dot point that you can easily line up.
BTW… one might notice the slight difference here when using the “first edge symmetry” vs “by length”… the upper and lower sleeve match when overlaid. An AHA momment.
Also I can tell you… if you keep your pattens around long enough and use them all the time, a point is just going to get dog eared.
