I have no doubts that you will pick this up quickly. 
I also am learning to use Seamly2D but lack any pattern (clothing) design experience, digital or otherwise. So far I have created 2 bag type patterns with this software. One is very simple. The other is a bit more complex as far as the curves go, but I used a paper pattern I created and sewed from for measurements. The forum members are very helpful when questions are poised.
The one garment I have sewn was with no pattern and the results bear proof of this. (Laughing at myself 
)
