The SVG export function is now exporting files that are 10-20x actual size. What has changed?
I have been using this function dozens of times over the past year to export pattern layouts for use in my Cricut design software. It has been working correctly until as recently as last month, when I successfully exported a SVG layout and the resulting file was the same size as my pattern piece.
When I tried to export today as I always have, the SVG file exported is significantly larger than my pattern piece. PNG files are still being exported at the correct size and appear correctly in my Cricut software. Tiled PDF layout previews are also showing at the correct size, so this issue appears to be unique to SVG settings.
I updated my Seamly2D and SeamlyME to the latest version today, but that has not fixed the problem (the SVG exports were incorrect with the previous version I had today and also the current version).
I have not otherwise changed any export settings since my last successful SVG exports last month.
I’m grateful for any help or suggestions. I have work to do and need these SVG exports working correctly again!
Hello and welcome to the Seamly forum, @c_in_london
I’ve just exported one of my patterns to SVG, directly from the Piece Mode, and the dimensions are correct. I have the latest version, but I’m on Windows 11.
@Douglas should be by shortly to have a look for you.
There’s really no SVG export settings, and nothing that would affect the scale of the export. And there should be no difference betwen the Windows (which I also checked and it exprts OK) and Mac versions.
I’ll trying exporting an SVG on my Mac Book and see what I get.
In the mean time - you said you exported the layout - did you do so from Layout mode? If so have you tried exporting the pieces from Piece mode?
Yes, I tried exporting from Piece mode as well, but had the same result. (NB: I only realised that I could export from Piece mode as well as Layout mode from your comments. I think this will save me some time for future projects, so thank you for that.)
In the interim, I looked at my SVG exports in Inkscape, and while I don’t know the exact dimensions of my pattern piece (once seam allowances are added), the result looks to be the size and scale that it should be.
Realising this, I started digging deeper and discovered a handful of comments suggesting the Cricut software I was importing files into has been having various issues with SVGs since last week. It appears they are tinkering with things in the background and not telling anyone, which has set me on this wild goose chase.
Originally I didn’t think it was the Cricut software because it was an action I had done previously dozens of times. But it turns out that it was behaving fine with any SVG I had already imported and was only having this issue with new SVGs, so I missed the nuance of the issue
Thank you for your prompt and thoughtful help, and sorry for cluttering the forum with an issue that isn’t even related to Seamly.
